Every cannula on a liposuction tray is a trade-off between speed, control and tissue trauma. Diameter, length, tip and hub each change how it behaves in the fat. This guide explains how to choose a liposuction cannula for each area and technique, and how to build a small starter set that covers most cases.
Diameter: the first decision when you choose a liposuction cannula
Diameter controls how fast fat is removed and how smooth the result is. A wide cannula removes volume quickly. However, it is more likely to leave contour irregularities, especially in the superficial layer. A narrow cannula is slower, but it gives finer control.
- 2–2.5 mm: face, neck, jawline and fine finishing work.
- 3 mm: the all-round size for arms, knees, ankles and finishing passes on larger areas.
- 4 mm: abdomen, flanks, back and thighs in the deep layer.
- 5 mm: high-volume debulking in large, deep areas only.
In practice, many surgeons start deep with a 4 mm cannula and then finish with a 3 mm one. As a result, they get speed early and a smooth surface at the end.
Length: how to choose a liposuction cannula for each area
A cannula that is too long is hard to control. On the other hand, one that is too short needs extra access incisions. As a rule of thumb, pick a length that crosses the treatment area from your planned incision.
- 10–15 cm: face, neck, chin and small areas.
- 20–25 cm: arms, abdomen, flanks and inner thighs.
- 30–35 cm: back, outer thighs and long passes across large areas.
Tip and port design
The tip decides how aggressively the cannula works, so it matters as much as size when you choose a liposuction cannula. Blunt tips with side ports are standard, because they push vessels and nerves aside instead of cutting them. Here are the main designs and where they fit:
- Mercedes (three ports): the most versatile design and a sensible first choice. Our Mercedes liposuction cannula comes in Luer Lock, Toomey and power-handle versions.
- Double and triple Mercedes: more ports, so more fat per pass. They suit bulk removal in the deep layer.
- Becker grater and basket tips: roughened or caged tips that break up fibrous fat. For example, they are useful on the back, the flanks and in male chest work. See the Becker basket cannula.
- Spiral and candy cane tips: ports set in a spiral, so the cannula draws fat evenly around its circumference. Try the Carraway spiral port cannula.
- Cobra (bi-bevel): a flattened, more aggressive tip for dense tissue.
Cannulas for infiltration
Before suction, tumescent fluid is infiltrated. Infiltration cannulas have many small holes along the shaft, so the fluid spreads evenly. They are thinner than suction cannulas, usually 1.5–2.5 mm. Straight, curved and bayonet shapes help you reach different areas. For instance, see our infiltration cannula.
Fat harvesting and fat transfer
When the fat will be grafted, the goal changes. Instead of fast removal, you want intact fat parcels of an even size. Therefore, harvesting cannulas are narrower, usually 2–3 mm, with many small ports. They are also used with a syringe at low negative pressure.
- Harvesting: triple Mercedes or multi-port fat harvesting cannulas.
- Processing: filters, canisters and Luer-to-Luer transfer adapters.
- Injection: fine blunt cannulas such as the Tonnard injector, the Toledo V-dissector or a spoon tip.
Hub type: choose a liposuction cannula that fits your equipment
The hub decides what the cannula connects to. So before you choose a liposuction cannula, check that the hub matches your equipment.
- Luer Lock: connects to a syringe. It is the standard for fat grafting, facial work and small-volume cases.
- Toomey and threaded fitting: attaches to a handle and tubing for suction-machine liposuction.
- Power handle: for power-assisted liposuction (PAL). The fitting must match your handpiece, so send us the model if you are unsure.
A starter set that covers most cases
You do not need every pattern on day one. In fact, a small set covers most routine cases:
- Mercedes, 3 mm and 4 mm, in 25 cm.
- Becker basket or grater, 3 mm, for fibrous areas.
- Infiltration cannula, 2 mm.
- Fat harvesting cannula, 2.5 mm, with a Luer Lock hub.
- Short 2 mm cannulas, 10–15 cm, for the face and neck.
- A handle, a Luer adapter and cleaning brushes for the lumen.
Alternatively, a ready-made kit is simpler to order. See our liposuction cannula sets.
Material, cleaning and care
Choose reusable cannulas in medical-grade stainless steel, with smooth welds and polished, burr-free ports. Also check that the tip is fully rounded and that the hub sits straight on the shaft.
Fat dries quickly inside a lumen. So flush each cannula straight after use and then brush the lumen with the right-sized brush. After that, clean it ultrasonically and autoclave it. Our instrument care and sterilization guide covers each step.
